Oklahoma City, OK -- Lilly Oncology On Canvas, an art exhibition honoring the physical and emotional journeys people face when confronted by a cancer diagnosis, will be on display at the OU Cancer Institute in November.
This public exhibit, which is touring communities nationwide, will showcase numerous pieces of art from the 2008 Oncology On Canvas competition. There is no cost to view the art. It is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, November 2 to 13, in the atrium area of the 5th floor of the OU Physicians Building, located at 825 N.E. 10th Street in Oklahoma City.
Launched in 2004, Oncology On Canvas is now calling for entries – from November 2, 2009 through June 30, 2010– for its 2010 competition. This biennial art competition invites people from the U.S. and Puerto Rico diagnosed with any type of cancer, as well as their families, friends, caregivers and healthcare providers, to express, through art and narrative, the life-affirming changes that give the cancer journey meaning.
In 2008, a total of 26 prizes were awarded to 20 cancer charities selected by the 19 winners in various categories. The themes explored in the nearly 600 entries ranged from hope, to fear, to the loss of individualism, to the support of family and friends, to the memory of those lost, to the perseverance of those who survive.
The traveling exhibition of art from the 2008 competition is currently touring hospitals, cancer centers, patient advocacy group meetings, and other venues nationwide.
Lilly Oncology On Canvas is presented by Lilly USA, LLC, a pharmaceutical company committed to advancing cancer research and treatment, in partnership with the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS), which advocates for quality cancer care for all Americans and provides tools and resources that empower people affected by cancer to advocate for themselves.
