Warning Signs

Is someone you know...

  • A decline in work or academic performance?
  • Demonstrating disruptive or disturbing behavior?
  • Showing dramatic changes in appearance, behavior or weight?
  • Having problems at home, with classes or work?
  • Making disturbing comments in conversation, email, letters, social media postings or papers?
  • Sad, anxious, or experiencing dramatic mood shifts?
  • Appear/acknowledge feeling depressed
  • Abusing alcohol or drugs?
  • Isolating themselves socially?
  • Acting paranoid or suspicious?
  • Frequently angry or easily frustrated?
  • Struggling with health problems?
  • Talking about not being around?
  • Giving away prized possessions?
  • Experiencing a significant loss?
  • A history of violent behavior?
  • Access to a firearm?
  • Express self-destructive or homicidal ideation?
  • Express feelings of hopelessness?
  • Have a history of self-destructive behavior?
  • Articulate specific plans to harm self and/or others?
  • Appear withdrawn?
  • Engage in "bullying" others?
  • Have difficulty with impulse control?
  • Have experienced prior trauma/tragedy?
  • Have been/ are victims of abuse?
  • Become involved with gangs?
  • Have experienced a significant loss?
  • Have been tormented and/ or teased by others?
  • Preoccupation with fighting?
  • Evidence a low tolerance for frustration?
  • Evidence a preoccupation with games or television with violent themes?
  • Externalize blame for their difficulties?
  • Evidence a preoccupation with guns and other weapons?
  • Have harmed small animals?
  • Have engaged in fire setting?
  • Have brought a weapon to school or work?
  • Evidence frequent disciplinary problems?

These behaviors, especially when more than one are present, may be signs that a student, faculty member or staff member is in distress.
