Changes in the capability for responding

Motor learning experiments summarize subjects' "capability for responding" through learning curves. These curves trace performance over time in terms of some measure. When the performance measure is error, then subjects are improving when their score decreases.

To assess "relatively permanent" changes, experiments must also distinguish between performance during acquisition trials and retention trials.
