Exercise prescription assignment
To complete the course's requirements, students prepare an exercise prescription. Execution of this requirement accounts for 20 percent of the course grade. In accordance with the Division's focus on the NCMRR model of disablement, the prescription may remediate impairments, functional limitations, disabilities, or handicaps. Alternatively, the prescription may focus on another of the Division tenets*, wellness and prevention. Students may write the prescription to address personal wellness or fitness, or design the prescription to address the problems or needs of another person.
*The Division's "basic tenets" are listed in the Student Handbook, p. 13.
Presentation options
Students have the option of presenting the prescription in writing, or by organizing a seminar during which they demonstrate aspects of the prescription to interested faculty and students.
Option 1. Paper:
Students may write a paper that describes the exercise prescription. Most papers will be 5 to 10 pages in length, but there is no minimum length requirement. The paper's format should adhere to the writing guidelines that are contained in the Division's Student Handbook. Additionally, the paper should follow the APA guidelines for citing references, including references that come from electronic media.
Option 2: Seminar
Students may demonstrate the prescription during a 30- to 45-minute seminar. This option is open to all students, but is most appropriate for those who prefer to augment their description of the prescription by demonstrating some of its components.
Due date
Monday, April 23, 2001, by 5 PM, to Prof. Thompson or Dr. Chesbro.
Overall objectives:
Regardless of the option that students choose for presenting the prescription, they should:
- describe the person for whom they designed the prescription, including relevant demographic characteristics, relevant personal characteristics, and important physical or pathological information.
- state the person's needs, goals, and desired outcomes, and specify the functional goals that the person will achieve after following the exercise prescription.
- describe specific activities that the person will find rewarding, meaningful, and age-appropriate.
- explain how the prescription's therapeutic activities account for relevant personal barriers, including constraints of time and transportation, and how they account for coexisting pathology, impairment, or functional limitation.
- specify the steps the person should follow to implement the prescription.
- specify the frequency, intensity, and duration of the activities that comprise the prescription.
- include references from literature that supports any part of the prescription, or that supports key facts in the student's chain of reasoning in developing any part of the prescription.
Additional requirements for PHTH / OCTH 7611
The exercise prescription also fulfills a requirement in PHTH/OCTH 7611, Patient Education. Students should refer to that course's materials for guidance on how to apply principles of patient education to the creation of the exercise prescription.
