Equilibrium points

An equilibrium point is associated with a joint position or joint angle where the moments of force developed in the spring-like structures on either side of the joint are equal and opposite.

LENGTH-TENSION PROPERTIES AND SPECIFICATION OF EQUILIBRIUM POINT

The figure illustrates an equilibrium point as the intersection of two moment-angle curves. These curves display properties similar to those of length-tension curves.

The "flexor" curve slopes upward to the right; the joint's flexor structures develop relatively little force in joint flexion (when they are shortened) and relatively greater force in extension (when elongated). The "extensor" curve is a mirror image of the "flexor" curve, sloping upward toward the left in the direction of increasing joint flexion.
