Producing change in an equilibrium point

We can produce a change in a joint's equilibrium point (Ep) if we can alter the length-tension properties of the soft tissue surrounding the joint. We can alter these properties in two ways:

equilibrium point

... by changing composite joint stiffness, reflected in the length-tension curve's slope.

In this figure, decreasing the "flexors'" stiffness shifts Ep to the right.

equilibrium point

... by changing the joint structure's resting length (l0), reflected in the length-tension curve's x-intercept.

In this figure, increasing the "flexors'"resting length shifts Ep to the right.

equilibrium point

Why are these changes in Ep frequently short-lived?
