From 2002 to 2015
A small
amount of online teaching materials existed in the Department of Pathology
before 2002. The current extensive program was started by one of our faculties,
Dr. Kar-Ming Fung, on October 2002. At the very beginning, it contained
two major arms- NeuroLearn which was
a neuropathology online self-learning program and
OU Pathology Case of the Month which was used to show the
interesting teaching cases. Online whole slide images (digital slides) became
available in 2008 and the OU Pathology
Online Slides, Atlas, & Quizzes was later created in order to use whole
slide images in regular teaching. In between, there were also
CytoLearn and
HemeLearn which were two programs that focused on hematopathology
and cytoplathology as well as a separate quiz program-
OU Anatomic Pathology Quiz Collection.
During these
years, Dr. Fung was the soul of the program but many other faculties and
trainees inside and outside our department contributed their help and provided
teaching materials. Out of this long list of contributors, Dr. Richard Leech,
Dr. Ravi Sawh, and Dr. Stanley Light foot made significant contribution to the
materials being used in this program. Dr. Lewis Hassell contributed a lot of
ideas and critiques. Dr. Michael Talbert, our current chairman of the
department, was the key person in the purchase of equipment that allowed the use
of online whole slide images.
From 2016
Just like any
programs that had been used for a long time, the materials in this program
started to get out dated and too diversified. This program was shut down for
renovation in the spring of 2016 and restructured. The entire program was
condensed into three major arms and re-launched in March, 2017.
OU
Pathology Online Slides, Atlas, & Quizzes:
This program contains online digital slides in the case of unknown slides
with quizzes attached to some of the cases. OU Case of the Month and OU
Anatomic Pathology Quiz Collection will be integrated into this program but
these two are still ongoing project as of this date. It is our hope that
this integration will be finished by the end of 2017.
NeuroLearn: This program contains normal neuroanatomy slides and neuropathology online digital slides and quizzes. We are planning to add the didactic materials form the original NeurolLearn back to this program in future.
Up Coming Plan for 2017-2019
CytoLearn: This program focuses on cytology self-learning materials. This program is still undergoing reconstruction and will be up and running by the end of 2017.
OU Pathology Case of the Month: This program is essentially a show case for our residents and our interesting cases. Our plan is to resurrect this program but the details are still under discussion. The goal is to resurrect this program by the end of 2017.
OU Anatomic Pathology Quiz: There is a plan to resurrect this program but it will be 2018 the earliest.
