Abstract or Additional Comments:
Healthcare provider counseling and written medicine information are optimal points of intervention to enhance patient awareness of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) risks. Patient health literacy and background characteristics may also influence these relationships. Cross-sectional data from the Alabama NSAID Patient Safety Study (2006) were used to examine the associations of physician counseling, pharmacist counseling, and written medicine information in relationship to awareness of NSAID risks in a sample of older, white and african american adults. Physician counseling was significantly associated with participants' awarenss of NSAID risks while pharmacist counseling and the reading of written medicine information were not. Barriers to communication in community pharmacies and inappropriately targeted written medicine information may diminish the effectiveness of these two important points of intervention in communicating NSAID risks to patients.
