Coracoclavicular ligament

  • connects the scapula's coracoid process with the clavicle's inferior surface.

  • composed of conoid and trapezoid sections

Upward rotation of the scapula around the AC joint's AP axis (red X) increases the gap between the coracoid process and the clavicle, elongating the coracoclavicular ligament.

Elongation develops passive tension in the ligament, which pulls on the clavicle's inferior surface, rotating the clavicle backward around the sternoclavicular (SC) joint's longitudinal axis.

Backward clavicular rotation elevates the clavicle's distal end, and affords the scapula additional range of motion on the thorax.
