Ellen Bannister, MA

Academic Programs Coordinator

What is your role with the CLL | UCEDD?

As an Academic Programs Coordinator, I co-design, teach, and evaluate interdisciplinary health profession education programs focused on supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and their family caregivers. I am committed to partnering with people with I/DD and other family caregivers to ensure that their voices and experiences shape the educational content and delivery. This collaboration is key to fostering a truly inclusive and effective learning environment for future health professionals.

Why did you decide to work in the field of Disability?

I chose to work in the field of disability because of my personal and professional experiences, especially my years as the mother of two young men with developmental disabilities. These experiences have given me a chance to see challenges faced by people with I/DD and their families, inspiring me to advocate for better education, support, and services. My goal is to create a health education system that honors the perspectives and expertise of people with I/DD and their caregivers and is responsive to their needs and goals.

How does your perspective inform your work?

My perspective is deeply rooted in my lived experience as a parent of sons with developmental disabilities and my work in disability advocacy. This dual lens drives me to create educational opportunities that are informed by the real-world experiences of people with I/DD and their families.

When you are not working, how do you relax and practice self-care?

I find relaxation and self-care through listening to audiobooks with my younger son, curating playlists, using AI to create musicals, and spending time cooking and doing yoga. I also enjoy engaging with art, film, and theater.

What is a motto or saying that motivates or inspires you?

“Never limit yourself because of others’ limited imagination: never limit others because of your own limited imagination.” -Dr. Mae Jemison
