Wanda P. Felty

Assistant Director & Community Leadership and Advocacy Coordinator

What is your role with the CLL | UCEDD?

I serve as the Assistant Director and Community Leadership and Advocacy Coordinator. I provide training to preservice professions, continuing education to professionals and community training to family members and self-advocates. I coordinate and facilitate the Oklahoma Family Leadership Network and direct the Family Mentorship Program.

Why did you decide to work in the field of Disability?

After graduating high school with a track scholarship, I initially pursued a degree in Deaf and Special Education. Although I couldn’t complete this path due to the birth of my daughter, her life and experiences guided me towards a different journey. I always felt destined to work in the field of disabilities, but I didn’t anticipate it would be through the lens of a parent with lived experience.

How does your perspective inform your work?

My perspective is deeply rooted in advocating for my daughter and addressing her needs. This personal journey has equipped me to enhance support and services for others. I recall when my daughter was young, I had to navigate the complexities of public education policies and developmental disability services. I often thought, “One day, I want to help other parents navigate these systems.” I even mused, “I don’t know if there’s any pay in it, but I wish I had someone to guide me.” And here I am today, fulfilling that very role.

When you are not working, how do you relax and practice self-care?

I’m a sports enthusiast, enjoying college and professional football, NASCAR, and Astros baseball. I also dabble in painting and have a passion for photography, especially capturing sunrises. Mornings are my quiet time to reflect and appreciate the day. I often pair my photos with inspiring quotes that resonate with my feelings. I’ve even created a few amateur photo books with these images.

What is a motto or saying that motivates or inspires you?

I live by two mottos: “Good things come and go, but GREAT things are worth waiting for,” and “Tomorrow’s a New Day.”
