Pediatric Residency Practicum

In a practicum experience for the OU College of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics, family leaders from CLL, Family Support 360’ Center and Oklahoma Family Network present parents’ perspectives when receiving diagnoses of developmental disabilities for their children.  First, second and third year medical residents learn from family members how to interact with patients and families, especially when delivering a diagnosis.

In this interactive, multi-media practicum, pediatric residents consider the perspectives and experiences of family members of people with developmental disabilities and expand cultural awareness of the needs of diverse families. Family leaders design, facilitate, and evaluate the practicum.  The guided discussion of two videos, which show contrasting methods of  delivery of a diagnosis of developmental disabilities, helps facilitate the understanding of what works and does not work during a stressful time for parents.
