Every year on June 19th, Oklahomans celebrate Juneteenth, a federally recognized holiday, which celebrates the arrival of union troops in Galveston, Texas in 1865. It was on this day that General Gordon Granger issued General Order number 3, which stated that all enslaved people were free and had equal rights. This event marked the final enforcement act of the Emancipation Proclamation and end of formal slavery in the United States. Celebrate this moment in history by learning about Black/African American Disability Advocates and attending some of the great local celebrations we have listed in Events below. Happy Juneteenth!
