Education

HEALTH FAIRS

The OUCHA Education Chair is responsible for coordinating health fairs at various elementary schools in the OKCPS system. Each health fair includes booths on three topics: Nutrition, Exercise, and Smoking Cessation. Fifteen medical student volunteers participate at each event, ranging between 1.5-3 hours. There are 7-8 health fairs hosted each semester.

Once a medical student has attended two health fairs, they are eligible to become a health fair leader. This entails emailing all the volunteers prior to the event with their script assignments, and keeping track of time allotments during the fair. The health fair leader will receive an additional education hour (on top of those offered to volunteers) for their time.

To sign up for a health fair, please keep a look out for emails from Sarah Kenney, which will be sent to all MS1 and MS2 students. If you have any questions, please contact Sarah-Kenney@ouhsc.edu

STOP THE BLEED

Stop the Bleed

What is itSTOP the Bleed (STB) is an initiative that was started be the American College of Surgeons in response to the many preventable deaths that occur in mass casualty events. This program’s goal is to empower every day citizens with the knowledge necessary to address a bleeding crisis until first responders arrive. Our very own Trauma Department is giving workshops throughout the state.

How is OUCHA participating? We are helping the OU Trauma One team at trainings that are open to the public around the state. Additionally, we are networking with OKCPS high schools in order to facilitate a workshop to Seniors in the metro area. You will get one education hour for every training you co-instruct.

How Can I get involved?

1.Sign up to attend Stop the Bleed training; this sign up is sent out by the Stop the Bleed Coordinator.

2.Attend a training and register to become a co-instructor.

3.Once you are a registered co-instructor you will receive invitations to participate at STB trainings.

CAR SEAT CHECKUPS

Car seat checkups are a public safety initiative designed to help parents with all aspects of car seat safety. Parents are taught how to install and care for their new car seats, and returning parents can see if it’s time for a change. OU Health currently hosts these events twice a month, and they need 2 volunteers for each event. Each event qualifies for 2 OUCHA community hours. See monthly signups for more details.
