Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery

A spectrum of care that includes surgical options

The OU Physicians Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program uses a multidisciplinary approach to assist patients in their weight loss journey. As an academic medical clinic, we stress the importance of medical research and support evidence-based medicine in that we only provide care methods that have been proven effective.

Our clinic combines experts with a variety of medical backgrounds to provide patients with the highest level of care and education as they begin their weight loss program. Bariatric surgery is not a “quick fix” and all patients will be required to meet with our team for medical check-ups, education and consultations prior to any procedure being scheduled.

Dr. Laura Fischer, Medical Director, is a board-certified surgeon and fellowship trained in bariatric surgical procedures. She is a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Joining her in the clinic are medical professionals specializing in diabetes, psychology, diet and exercise, and post-operative care. A nurse coordinator will ensure that all aspects of care are carefully addressed throughout the patient’s time in our care.

The OU Physicians Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program offers two primary types of bariatric surgery options, the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and Sleeve Gastrectomy. In the majority of patients, the surgery is performed using minimally invasive techniques designed to speed healing and lessen the risk of infection. As a fellowship trained surgeon, Dr. Fischer is also experienced in revising previous bariatric procedures that need additional surgical intervention, including sleeve-to-RYGB conversion, lap-band-to-sleeve/RYGB conversion, lap-band removal, and management of complex bariatric complications.

Before surgery is scheduled, we will work with the patient to complete the necessary coaching and testing needed and required, including the following:

  • Attend a free bariatric surgery information seminar
  • Get pre-approved by the insurance provider or discuss income-based self-pay options with our financial services department
  • Work with our weight loss team on diet and exercise changes
  • Complete medical testing appropriate to your condition, such as blood work (overall health), EKG (heart health), and potentially other tests.
  • Undergo a comprehensive medical evaluation with a bariatric nurse practitioner

Please join us for Bariatric Support Group Meetings

Bariatric surgery patients are much more successful when meeting with other patients to share information, successes, and challenges. Discussions will focus on a particular topic each month. Patients who are scheduled for surgery and those who have had surgery, as well as people in support roles for bariatric surgery patients, are encouraged to attend.

Meetings last about one hour each and are held in Suite 3200 (third floor) in the diabetes center. Groups meet twice monthly for your convenience. Call the clinic for a session schedule and to RSVP. (405) 271-9448
